Important results from the project
The Athena Award for excellent performance in clinical research was established in 2008. The aim is to show the importance of clinical research to develop health care and to stimulate growth in the health care industry. This years laureate was Ola Winqvist, Professor in Cellular Immune Therapy at Karolinska institutet, and his project Tailored Leukapheres for Immunological Diseases. The Health Care Reserach Day was this year focusing on bridging the gap between health care and research, to make a higher awareness of the importance of clinical research.
Expected long term effects
The Athena award laureate was presented Dec. 5, 2013 in connection with the Swedish Medical Society´s national conference. Laureate Ola Winqvist was interviewed in a major story in Dagens Medicin, and the press release was published on the partner organizations´ websites as well on Karollinska university hospital´s website. The prize was awarded by Chris Heister, Governor of Stockholm County. Healthcare Research Day was held in Stockholm February 1, 2013 with a program that was developed in cooperation with VINNOVA, the Swedish Research Council and other co-sponsors.
Approach and implementation
The nomination procedure for the Athena Award was made in two steps, where it was free to propose candidates in the first stage and the jury then selected ten candidates who were asked to make a complete nomination. This year we had more nominated reserach projects of high quality than previous years. The Healthcare Research Day was marketed with full-page ads in Dagens Medicin, by banner ads on dagensmedicin.se and by sending out newsletters.
