Important results from the project
The aim of the project was to; 1) generate a knowledge base report including an inventory of capabilities and competence related to vaccine production in Sweden 2) to map specific private and public investments within vaccine production in European countries similar to Sweden and how these have been influences by government support 3) identify and describe synergies with production of other biologicals. The project has delivered all goals and in addition generated a public report, available on the Vinnova web page.
Expected long term effects
The report forms a base for decision makers for future directions and investments. It describes the complexity, challenges, and possibilities within the area, an inventory, and evaluation of infrastructure, capacity, capability, and resilience in an international perspective. It is expected to contribute to development of fact-based strategies. The overall goal is for Sweden to become more attractive for vaccine production, with excellence and capacity within advanced process development and biologicals based on a strong industry sector and basic research.
Approach and implementation
The steering group had links to all involved organisations. RISE was responsible for project management and most of the project work and coordination. Business Sweden was responsible for the international mapping. Knowledge building, mapping and interpretation of results were performed within different work packages (WPs). To efficiently collect information from different stake holders, the draft report was sent out with a connected survey. The project period was tight, all WPs were performed in parallel. More time for planning, analysis and scenarios would have been optimal.
