Important results from the project

The purpose was to modify a forming research tool and validate an effective hot forming procedure for a GKN titanium component. Further, the project has generated the necessary documentation of the hot forming procedure and also performed a GAP-analysis at the SME. The project has delivered the targets in the project description and the purpose is thereby fulfilled. The technical result is satisfactory with parts that are within shape tolerance and where the cycle time is shorter than at the existing American sub-supplier. Selected results will be published in scientific journals.

Expected long term effects

If production shall be possible, a successful outcome in the closely related SMF Flyg project (Diarie no: 2016-03485) in which the necessary following processes of the hot formed part are performed and documented. GKN have to decide if the part outcome and the cluster of companies fulfill the requirements for production of the specific titanium part. The technological outcome is satisfactory and GKN is very satisfied. The effects for the companies are expected to be major in terms of technical competence, turnover and competitiveness if this unique production should be a reality.

Approach and implementation

The project has functioned well and resulted in fulfilling the stated targets. Somewhat larger number of hot formed parts would have been desireable, but will be produced in a related NFFP 6 project Diarienr: 2014-00919. The time frame of the project turned out to be somewhat to tight since SME had to consider a high occupancy in their recourses connected to modifications of the hot forming tool and recourses to conduct the GAP-analysis. A request for change, to extend the project in time, were made to VINNOVA . It was sufficient to be able to finalize all the activities in the project.
