Important results from the project
The purpose of the project is to identify the conditions for using IoT in different industries. Our research supports the thesis that there are several different ecosystems and industries in which IoT is included or can be included rather than having its own IoT ecosystem. The project has achieved the goals by identifying and describing these different conditions that exist in different industries and sectors. This applies to both the type of applications (we have studied industrial IoT, energy, home, care and care, sports and health) and how business is created and implemented.
Expected long term effects
The project has given increased insights into opportunities and obstacles when introducing IoT (and digitization) in different sectors. The main obstacles are considered to be: - Insufficient scalability when several players want to offer own solutions - Fragmentation due to the diversity of parallel solutions - Distrust and hesitation among actors to share platforms and data - Fear of changing the own business model The conclusion is that potential gains with IoT and digitization risk not being achieved if actors do not change their way of doing business and collaborate with others.
Approach and implementation
The basic idea in the approach was -to study different sectors in order to identify key features -to implement two types of workshops; first data collection and then dissemination of results. The approach proved to work very well. - The collected data indicate clear differences between sectors - The workshops (a total of about 20) were very rewarding. This was due to i) Partner´s broad contact network used for invitations, ii) Partner´s active involvement, and iii) the participants at workshops and interviews showed great openness to share their view and concerns on use of new technology.
