Important results from the project

One of two planned mill trials were performed to validate the promising results from the pre-study. The link between fiber- and paper-properties has been analyzed and the results suggest that more data is needed to further study the process dynamics of the refining operation. Because of this and defections within the project the decision was taken to terminate the project prematurely. The method has potential but needs a substantially larger data set to be validated.

Expected long term effects

The analysis of the mill trials shows that there is a strong link between measurable fiber properties and key properties of the produced sample sheets. The models are however limited by the relatively small data set. The analysis shows that much larger trials are needed to achieve the expected results. Overall, it was assessed that this is possible, but not within the scope of the current project with the current partners in the project. The methodology and the results have been described in detail in an internal report, as a potential basis for future research projects.

Approach and implementation

The project aimed to perform two factory trials and develop tools that can be used in the control and optimization of the refining process. A training program was supposed to be included, to ensure that the parties involved would take the results further after the project. The first of the mill trials were conducted. Multivariate models were developed that linked fiber properties to the key characteristics of the studied paper grades. It is possible to model the properties based on fiber data, but the experimental design is complex and extensive work is required to take this further.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
