Purpose and goal
A-FRONTHAUL project intends to demonstrate that distributed MIMO (D-MIMO) realized with analog radio-over-fiber (ARoF) technology has unique advantages over conventional methods when regarding speed and efficiency. ARoF architecture provides the best cost-effectiveness considering the challenges of the new topologies for 6G. We will validate ARoF technology as a successful candidate for 6G mobile fronthaul through a demonstration in relevant industrial environment reaching TRL7.
Expected effects and result
The project is expected to result in the establishment of a close and long-term collaboration between the parties for the next generation of radio access technology. It will contribute to sustainable growth for the industry by strengthening the value chain from seller to solution provider. It will increase cooperation between the parties and strengthen international competitiveness. The project´s results will form the basis for and validate the feasibility of energy-efficient mobile communication technologies that enable 6G.
Planned approach and implementation
WP0 (RISE) Coordination, specification budget and reports WP1 (Ericsson) Architecture alternatives for ARoF D-MIMO systems: Ericsson will provide wireless transceivers and advanced electronic component prototypes. WP2 (RISE) Optical transceiver specification studies to support analog fronthaul: Argotech and RISE have provided high-speed optoelectronic component prototypes. WP3 (RISE&Ericsson) System demonstration and characterization: RISE will provide a high-speed components and equipment. The final testbed will be at Ericsson premises.
