Important results from the project

Our vision for this project was to produce the worlds first toothbrush produced in algae and at the same time focus on high functionality, an attractive design and a low environmental impact. We have managed to fulfill this and we are very proud and exited about our first prototypes produced in algae biomaterial and a composite with swedish wood. The prototypes have been function tested, an LCA was carried out and the chemical composition examined. Our entire project has had a strong focus on sustainability and is based on the UN´s sustainability goals that we stated in our application.

Expected long term effects

The results of the project have been far above expectations. Our tests and analysis that we have undertaken show that it is possible to produce a toothbrush from both our own algae bio-formula and from composite materials made of Swedish wood. The life cycle analysis shows that algae, as an ingredient instead of traditional plastic, can reduce cumulative energy demand and greenhouse gases emissions.

Approach and implementation

One of the first steps was to test the algae formula to see if it was suitable for the injection mold process. We tested different ratio with the components to find the right formula that fullfilled our criteria. We refined our design of the toothbrush and the injection mold process took place. The final algae recipe was used for the first prototypes and we also tested a Swedish composite material made out of wood. The tufting process took place and the prototypes were tested and an LCA was carried out. Analysis: The project was carried out according to plan.
