Airborne Multistatic Radar Systems

Reference number
Coordinator Saab AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 750 000
Project duration October 2023 - August 2024
Status Ongoing
Venture Strengthened Swedish aeronautical research and development

Purpose and goal

The goal of the project is to study and propose methods that can be used for airborne multistatic radar. The research in the project will include algorithms that reduce the reliance on assumptions about the environment. These assumptions can include the nature of the ground returns, for target echoes, and for the direct signal. This contributes to the robustness of these types of systems.

Expected effects and result

The expected outcomes are models for airborne multistatic radar and methods to mitigate previous limitations and dependencies. This contributes to greater flexibility both in the development and in the use of such radar systems. The project is also expected to strengthen Saab´s and Chalmers´ expertise in new and advanced methods for airborne multistatic radar systems. This contributes to Chalmers´ ability to enhance its position in advanced signal processing and is expected to increase Saab´s competitiveness in the international market for advanced radar systems.

Planned approach and implementation

The project implementation includes an initial basic modeling of the problem. The problem scope is considered from both an operational and technical perspective. The operational perspective involves identifying relevant scenarios, while the technical perspective builds on models and methods from previous projects (within NFFP7). The project includes frequent and regular meetings between the parties. It also includes workshops and seminars for the dissemination and discussion of results, which will take place at both Chalmers and Saab.
