Important results from the project

AFCEAHack brought together people with diverse backgrounds from companies, authorities and universities to meet, discuss cyber security and develop knowledge in a competitive environment. Through AFCEAHack, we have highlighted opportunities for young talents to pursue cyber security care, which is particularly important when 80% of Sweden´s IT executives report on the difficulty of recruiting security personnel and that this shortcoming is a direct contributory factor to the business´s suffering from cyber attacks.

Expected long term effects

AFCEAHack promotes collaboration between universities, developers, industry companies and government agencies to strengthen the ability to prevent, detect and manage cyber attacks. During AFCEAHack, the IT security industry´s most experienced and today´s students met. In this way, they learned new areas such as IT forensics and penetration tests. We showed that it is possible to create events to generate interest in cyber security, and inspired other companies to do the same. In this way, opportunities were created where students could meet industry companies and authorities.

Approach and implementation

AFCEAHack was held in conjunction with the conference AFCEA TechNet 17, at Scandic Infra City outside Stockholm. On site were students from different parts of Sweden, and 6 mentors with background in cyber security. The teams consisted of 3-4 people, with varied skills. We used a CTF (Capture the Flag) setup, where each team attempted to collect 20 flags during the three days. The environment was set up by security consultant Engvall Security, supported by KTH. The event was organized together with BeMyApp, a leading event organizer focusing on hackathons.
