Purpose and goal

In a future with automated vehicles, the importance of including the effects of the car´s maneuver before a collision and its impact on human muscle activation and movement increases. With the overall objective of being able to evaluate car occupant protection throughout whole sequences of events, the aim of this project was to develop a methodology to enable muscle control in an active human model for situations with vertical accelerations, validate the model and continuously use it for safety system development. The project resulted in an updated model that fulfills this objective.

Expected effects and result

The unique active human body model developed together by the project partners has been further developed for use in more situations such as maneuvers with large global rotations and the model has been prepared for use in situations with vertical accelerations. By further strengthening this competitive tool, Swedish actors in the automotive industry are given the opportunity to develop future unique products for occupant protection.

Planned approach and implementation

The methods in the project can be characterized as a combination of fundamental research, applied research and industrial application. The basic research parts primarily concerned further development of muscle modeling, while applied research involved the collection and processing of volunteer data as well as model improvement. Finally, the model has continuously been used in industrial applications.
