Important results from the project
The aim of the 5G-Enabled Manufacturing (5GEM) project was to demonstrate pilot production for world-class manufacturing enabled by wireless and mobile 5G-communication. Concepts beyond state-of-the-art for 5G technology in manufacturing were demonstrated. Project results have been widely disseminated to industry, society, scientific communities, and university students.
Expected long term effects
The 5GEM project showed technical feasibility of four demonstrator applications that can be scaled to any number of sensors, machines, machine operators etc., indicating major potential effects and values for both telecom (providers) and manufacturing (user) industries. The project scope did not include new business models, but strong potential business values can be seen.
Approach and implementation
The 5GEM collaborative and challenge-driven project brought together key stakeholders to demonstrate 5G applicability in manufacturing. Enabling 5G technology was brought by Ericsson. SKF made available a world-class manufacturing system for tests. Chalmers provided testbeds, and research capabilities. Vinnova enabled risk funding. The key life-cycle phases of a competitive manufacturing system were targeted, i.e. design, deployment, operation and maintenance. The 5GEM project implemented 5G technologies in testbed lab environments and in real manufacturing settings.
