87 million for the development of 6G - the next generation of wireless technology

Published: 9 October 2024

Vinnova has decided to finance 17 project within 6G, the next generation wireless system. The SEK 87 million investment will, among other things, finance test environments, 3D printed antennas and microwave components, and development of networks for 6G.

In a world where digital solutions are becoming increasingly advanced and interconnected, faster and more powerful systems are required than those available today. A technology with great potential to meet the needs is 6G, the next generation wireless system. Stronger systems, with increased capacity, can lead to a range of new data-driven applications and increased productivity in several areas and industries, for example in industry and production, transport, health and the environment.

With this spring's two large 6G calls for proposals, where 17 project received funding totaling SEK 87 million, Vinnova supports a wide range of actors who want to work with 6G development. The first projects are expected to start in October 2024.

- We have granted funds for a variety of project, from pure technology solutions to collaboration arenas and policy work. For a new technology to reach its full potential, several steps are needed. The 6G projects that receive funding will contribute to the development of next-generation wireless systems in several different ways, comments Cecilia Sjöberg, head of division and director at Vinnova.

The national the call for proposals finances project with SEK 71 million, and the international one with SEK 16 million.

- Sweden has contributed strongly to previous generations of wireless systems, but we can get better at cooperating with international parties. Today, it is more important than ever to cooperate with other countries in order to maintain a position and drive research and innovation that leads to sustainable social development in a globalized world, says Frédéric Pillot, programme manager and responsible for 6G at Vinnova.

In the coming months, Vinnova is planning for more calls for proposals within 6G.
