6G networks are expected to lead to improved speed, data processing, seamless connectivity and significantly reduced latency. Something that will be important in a number of areas, when it comes to, for example, the connection of autonomous vehicles, automation in industry, in the field of health and much more. For example, connected devices in 6G networks will be able to read, synchronize and optimize the flow in a factory with precision.

Vinnova is launching three calls for proposals within 6G, with a total budget of SEK 90 million. These are the first the calls for proposals within a task that Vinnova and the Swedish Research Council have been given by the government to make a special effort to strengthen basic research, applied research and innovation in the field during 2024–2026.

- Sweden and the Nordics have long been leaders in mobile telephony and telecoms, and we are now investing to have a strong position in 6G development as well. We want Sweden to be a country that is attractive for innovation, new solutions and businesses that help increase the benefits of 6G, says Erik Borälv, who works with investments at Vinnova.

Project is financed which will contribute to strengthening Sweden's capacity and innovative capacity within 6G but also strengthen international collaborations with research actors in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, India, South Korea, Singapore and within the EU.

Development is needed in several areas for 6G to work. It concerns, for example, smart materials, AI, software and radio technology. Security is another important area. International standards, policies and regulations are also an important issue.

- Not everyone remembers, but a few years ago a mobile phone you bought in Europe could not of course be used in the US because there were different standards, which has since been resolved. International standardization work is also needed for 6G, so that, for example, a self-driving connected car can be sold and used everywhere, says Erik Borälv.

In addition to funding research- and innovation projects, Vinnova will also provide the opportunity to funding supervision for 100 degree theses until 2026 which will contribute to increasing competence in the 6G area.

Vinnova together with the Swedish Research Council wants to create a national platform for 6G, similar to the one that exists for artificial intelligence in the form of AI Sweden, as well as a new research program for doctoral students.
