Tests in a real environment will pave the way for a more sustainable industry

Published: 23 September 2022

Vinnova has decided to finance four feasibility studies of so-called system demonstrators within sustainable industry. It is about strengthening the industry's ability to react to external disturbances in terms of such things as the environment, geopolitics, energy supply and access to raw materials, in order to create a more resilient production.

In a system demonstrator, different actors together to test and demonstrate the transformation of a system in a real environment, in terms of things like technology, behaviours, culture, regulations and markets, where areas with great potential can then be scaled up. Vinnova is now investing in four feasibility studies for system demonstrators that aim to increase the industry's ability to react to external disturbances regarding, for example, the environment, geopolitics, energy supply, finance, equipment, raw materials, skills, distribution, logistics and customer markets in order to create a more sustainable and resilient production.

The project that are now receiving funding aim to investigate and test concepts before full-scale project in the form of a system demonstrator. The projects consist of collaborations between industrial companies, regions, universities and other actors. The feasibility studies are expected to be completed within 6-12 months.

Project that receives funding:

On-demand manufacturing for resilient production

The project will investigate the possibility and conditions for establishing a system demonstrator for needs-oriented manufacturing of the process industry's critical spare parts. By attacking and closing the gaps between need owners and manufacturers, the system can be made efficient and resilient, and thus contribute to an innovative, competitive and sustainable engineering industry in Sweden.
In the project, companies in the steel and manufacturing industry collaborate with Karlstad University, Region Dalarna, RISE and Sandvikens municipality.

Energihamnen – resilient and sustainable energy supply in Malmö

The project will develop a concept for a sustainable energy supply system through the Energihamnen in Malmö which will give the industry new and more favorable conditions to work from,
The project is carried out with a core of selected experts from the energy sector, industry, Malmö municipality, Region Skåne and a triple helix cluster.

A system for increased and sustainable resilience for the energy supply of manufacturing industries

The project aims to clarify the conditions for creating a system demonstrator for increased resilience in the energy supply of industries. The system is based on a scalable energy module that uses hydrogen for energy storage and can deliver a number of electricity support services. In the project, companies in manufacturing and energy collaborate with Region Västerbotten, Vilhelmina municipality and Umeå University.

Demonstrator for innovation-critical metals and mineral flow systems

The intention is to demonstrate a resilient supply system of innovation-critical metals based on recycled raw materials and circular flows within electrification and fossil-free energy in Sweden. The core of the demonstrator is the establishment of a testbed for the industrialization of these circular flows of innovation-critical metals and minerals.
In the project, RISE, Chalmers technical university college, Region Västerbotten, the Västra Götaland region and companies in recycling and mining work together
