A new recipe is needed for the food system

Published: 23 May 2022

The research is clear, the industry agrees - the food system needs to be transformed to be sustainable for both people and the environment. Right now, Vinnova offers an opportunity to be part of a new initiative for innovation and sustainable change in the food area. Five areas with the potential to radically improve the food system are in focus of the initiative.

Sweden has great potential to increase its ability to innovate so that the food system contributes to caring for both the environment and human health, while at the same time providing us with food, jobs and quality of life.

- The need for renewal and innovation is so urgent that it is not enough to just optimize the current system. Our effort will give key players with radically new ideas better conditions to experiment and build capacity together to transform the food sector, says Jenny Sjöblom, responsible for the investment in Vinnova.

Five areas with great potential have been identified during the survey that Vinnova did together with actors from different parts of the food system during the spring. They are:

  • Regenerative, resilient and nature-positive food production
  • Protein shift
  • Food tech for the food of the future
  • Preventive health through food
  • Sustainable eating habits in young people

The investment is divided into different stages, where the first is to enable key players to meet, build trust and collaboration, create common objective and build capacity to together transform the food system. This will create the conditions for next year, 2023, to be able to apply for funding for long-term innovation environments.
