Investing in computer labs should speed up development within AI

Published: 27 May 2019

Vinnova is now investing in eight new computer labs that will promote the use of data in different areas. These include a space data lab, a data lab with a focus on the sea and a language data lab. Access to large amounts of data is important, not least for the development of artificial intelligence (AI).

Data labs are needed to develop access to data and help actors use data for innovation. Vinnova is now funding eight environments that will serve as national data labs for different industries and areas.

- We expect significantly more data-driven innovations to be developed with social and economic values. The value of data does not exist in the collection but in the use, for increased learning and better decision-making processes. The data lab will help ensure that data is of high quality and is of an extent that enables development within AI, says Erik Borälv, responsible for the call for proposals.

The initiative is a complement to Vinnova's other offers in digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence.

Eight environments receive funding for two years with a total of SEK 27 million:

Swedish language data lab
Through collaboration with leading actors in language technology and needs owners, the lab will produce the Swedish reference data set and models for Natural Language Processing (NLP) and make them available with open access in AI Innovation of Sweden's data factory.
Coordinator: AI Innovation of Sweden, Lindholmen

Ocean Data Factory
A computer factory with a focus on sea and marine that wants to enable Sweden to be a global leader for sustainability and innovation in the digital blue economy.
Coordinator: Göteborgs Universitet

National space data lab
A data lab aimed at increasing the use of data from space for the development of society and industry and for the best of the globe.
Coordinator: AI Innovation of Sweden, Lindholmen

National forest data lab
The forest database offers an infrastructure for accessing satellite data, forest geodata and comprehensive mapping. The environment is to be an open experimental workshop and is aimed at the forest sector with the business sector and authorities as the main users and partners.
Coordinator: The National Forest Agency

KoDa - Kollektivtrafikens Datalab
Public transport's data lab builds on trafiklab.se and provides further data in real-time format along with historical data and annotated data sets.
Project Coordinator: RISE

Data lab for company data as national resource
The data lab will create the conditions for the development of innovative by making company data, APIs and tools available. The platform should be a national node in the field of public service to companies and businesses. Project coordinator: The Swedish Companies Registration Office

Establishment of data lab for the forest digital chain
A lab with harvester data, scooter data, transport data, images, measurement data, business data, control data and product output data. The environment will offer tools and methods to enable new innovations for the players in the forest industry. The data lab will create good conditions for using AI in innovation development and focus on the forest value chain from the forest to the industry.
Coordinator: Biometria

Datalabb Resultaten in the state
A data lab that will promote the development of a data-driven results and result collaboration within complex social areas. The lab aims to create a new form of analysis and decision support for different levels in the public sector. Project Coordinator: The Financial Management Agency
