Jenny Johansson, program assistant at Vinnova

Two years ago, Jenny Johansson took the step from department secretary at a university college to become a program assistant in the innovation management department at Vinnova.

What attracted you to Vinnova?

- The important social mission! Every year, Vinnova helps a large number of companies and organizations to strengthen their innovative power. It feels fun and meaningful to be part of it. Vinnova also has a unique culture, which reflects what we work with. It is modern, innovative and without prestige. This is not least noticeable in our activity-based office where you have the freedom to sit where you want and it is easy to have a quick meeting. As a newcomer, I quickly became one of the gang and I feel that everyone is generous with their knowledge. Our programme manager for example, regularly presents current project to the staff group, which gives you insight into areas other than those you work with yourself.

What do your working days look like?

- As a program assistant, I support the case managers with a range of administrative tasks. It can be about everything from planning conferences to publishing material on the web and answering questions in connection with calls for proposals. I work a lot with the program Innovative startups, where in the last round we received about 600 applications from young companies that applied for funding. It's exciting to hear about all the ideas they want to bring to life.

What does it take to become a sharp program assistant?

- You need to be structured and thorough, as the role includes a lot of administration, but at the same time open and curious. The more you take an interest in and learn about Vinnova's activities, the easier it is to do a good job.

What opportunities for development and learning are there?

- If you are curious, there is much to learn and many to learn from. I am surrounded by colleagues who often have excellence in some area. I myself have an education in journalism and enjoy writing a lot. This has led to me now having the opportunity to work with Vinnova's site and to present our project in digital learning in an easily accessible way.
