Together for sustainable plastic use

Together with several other actors Vinnova works to promote sustainable plastic use and reduce the environmental impact of plastic. A central part of this initiative is plastic contracts, where companies, authorities and organizations jointly develop circular and climate-smart solutions. The goal is to jointly create resource-efficient and non-toxic plastic flows.

Plastic

There is a great need to speed up the transition to a more sustainable use of plastic. It is a complicated job that requires efforts from many different actors and from many different perspectives to bring about a change.

Together with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Vinnova runs a collaboration with the stated aim of supporting and driving the transition. The next step in that collaboration is to try a new tool: plastic contracts.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is the coordinating public authority for the government mission National plastic coordination, which aims to use plastic in the right places and in a way that is resource-efficient, circular, non-toxic and climate-smart, with as little leakage as possible.

Other partners in this work are the Swedish Energy Agency, Formas, Svenskt Vatten, BioInnovation and RESource.

Plastic contracts can promote sustainable plastic use

Plastic contracts function as an agreement where companies, authorities and other organizations come together to jointly contribute to reducing the negative environmental impact of plastics. By entering into a plastic contract, the actors undertake to work with resource-efficient, circular and non-toxic solutions that contribute to a climate-smart future.

- In order to achieve a more sustainable use of plastic, different actors need to cooperate and collaborate. Through this concept, actors involved undertake to join forces for joint solutions, facilitate each other and help each other to step over the obstacles that exist, says Åsa Stenmarck, who is responsible for National Plastics Coordination at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

And continues:

- With the plastic contracts, we hope to see specific changes in a few selected areas where sustainable plastic use can be promoted. By engaging actors in the contract, they can develop further and take significant steps towards more sustainable plastic use.

In the film, Åsa Stenmarck talks about plastic contracts and what they can mean.

Who is the plastic contract for?

The plastic contracts are addressed to all actors within various industries and value chains, such as the electronics industry, but also to municipalities and other companies.

Do you want to join and get involved?

We are currently gathering actors within plastic production, recycling and design to contribute their insights and resources. Together, we formulate concrete sustainability goals for the plastic life cycle, which become the basis for contracts and commitments. When the goals are set, the actors will sign the contract and they will begin the implementation of the measures.
