Together for sustainable plastic use

Together with several other actors, Vinnova works to promote sustainable plastic use and reduce the environmental impact of plastic. A central part of this initiative is the Plastic Contract, where companies, authorities and organizations jointly develop circular and climate-smart solutions. The goal is to jointly create resource-efficient and non-toxic plastic flows.

Plastic

There is a great need to accelerate the transition to more sustainable plastic use. It is a complex task that requires efforts from many different actors and from many different perspectives to achieve change.

Together with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Vinnova is running a collaboration with the express purpose of supporting and driving the transition. The next step in that collaboration is to test a new tool: plastic contracts.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is the coordinating public authority for the government mission National Plastics Coordination, which aims to use plastic in the right places and in a way that is resource-efficient, circular, non-toxic and climate-smart, with as little leakage as possible.

Other partners in this work are the Swedish Energy Agency, Formas, Svenskt Vatten, BioInnovation and RESource.

Plastic contracts can promote sustainable plastic use

Plastic contracts function as an agreement where companies, authorities and other organizations come together to jointly contribute to reducing the negative environmental impact of plastics. By entering into a plastic contract, the actors commit to working with resource-efficient, circular and non-toxic solutions that contribute to a climate-smart future.

– To achieve more sustainable plastic use, different actors need to cooperate and collaborate. Through this concept, actors involved commit to pooling their efforts for common solutions, facilitating each other and helping each other overcome existing obstacles, says Åsa Stenmarck, who is responsible for National Plastics Coordination at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

And continues:

– With the Plastics Contracts, we hope to see specific changes in a few selected areas where sustainable plastic use can be promoted. By engaging actors in the contract, they can develop further and take significant steps towards more sustainable plastic use.

In the film, Åsa Stenmarck and Ida Langborg, head of department at Vinnova, talk about plastic contracts and the new the call for proposals that is now open.

Who is the plastic contract aimed at?

The plastic contracts are aimed at all actors within different industries and value chains, such as the electronics industry, but also at municipalities and other companies.

Do you want to help drive the transition to sustainable plastic use? There is now an open call for proposals where projects that apply will lay the foundation for site contracts.

Do you want to join in and get involved?

We are currently bringing together actors in plastic production, recycling and design to contribute their insights and resources. Together we are formulating concrete sustainability goals for the plastic life cycle, which will be the basis for contracts and commitments. Once the goals are set, the actors will sign the contract and they will begin implementing the measures.
