Statistics Sweden's basic platform will strengthen all authorities responsible for statistics

Statistikmyndigheten SCB is developing a basic platform that will not only be useful for Statistics Norway themselves, but for all the 29 authorities responsible for statistics that are responsible for official statistics in their respective areas. That's what project manager Jakob Engdahl says, who is currently testing the platform on Örebro University's infrastructure.

Basic platform for data processing and analysis - or "Balsam" for short, that's the name of SCB's data lab initiative, which is run together with AI Sweden and Öresbro University. The goal is to create a solution where it is not only possible to collaborate with colleagues in one's own organization, but also with other actors and organizations. The venture must also be a form of knowledge library where it is possible to process and analyze data in a quality-assured manner.

The project is coming to an end and therefore Jakob Engdahl and his colleagues are working to secure the continued management.

- In the project, we are fully engaged in some re-engineering so that the quality of what we deliver should feel good. At the same time, we are testing the platform on Örebro University's infrastructure to ensure that it works outside of our own infrastructure at SCB. We also hope to have a pilot at AI Sweden's edge lab, even if it is not an absolute eligibility requirements. Otherwise, as in most projects, we discuss how we take this further both internally at Statistics Sweden but also linked to other networks at national and European level, says Jakob Engdahl, who works with business development at Statistics Sweden on a daily basis.

He explains that there is a hope that this type of framework and competence library can be a basis for being able to intensify and streamline collaboration between different types of organizations so that it is possible to intensify the national collaboration needed to benefit from AI in society. In addition, this basic support that Statistics Norway is building must also benefit other authorities responsible for statistics.
