Data from space turns the lab into an innovation factory
The space data lab in Gothenburg is just an intermediate step that makes data from space useful in society. Among other things, a project is being carried out together with the Norwegian Forestry Agency which aims to eliminate clouds - at least visually.
AI Sweden at Lindholmen in Gothenburg has several labs - and one of them is the space-oriented Space Data Lab, which Chiara Ceccobello is in charge of. The goal of the venture is simply to enable the use of space data.
- We have an incredible amount of space data and we would like to create tools and platforms so that many different actors can benefit from them and use the knowledge found within these data cubes. The hope is that the use can create innovations in different types of areas, such as, for example, climate change or renewable energy, says Chiara Ceccobello.

At the moment, the lab collaborates, among other things, with the Swedish Forestry Agency in a project that aims to create thin cloud masks. In this way, it is possible to create a tool that can clear away "annoying clouds" that get in the way of satellite images.
The venture is a continuation of the first version of the space data labIt is led by AI Sweden, Luleå University of Technology, RISE and the Swedish Space Agency.
- At the end of the project, we hope to have a platform where a user can go and inspect and download space data to create knowledge and innovation based on it. Once we have a tool that can be used by many, we have taken an important step towards many different people being able to use space data, which is fun, says Chiara Ceccobello.
