Agrifood Data Workshop built a computer washing machine
The Dataverkstaden Agrifood Data Workshop, ADW, objective to make the use and sharing of data easier and safer and to promote innovations in the agricultural and food chain. The project continues, but there is already a very concrete results in the form of a washing machine that washes data.
Some parts of the agriculture and food sector generate sensitive data and may need to be protected. Other parts generate data that is completely unproblematic and can be distributed freely. Agrifood Data Workshop wants more people to dare and be able to share their data. We have previously written about that here.
A very concrete results of AWD so far is a "data washing machine". It is a tool that allows current information classification of a data set to be transferred and used to automatically mask large data sets that can then be made available for machine reading. In short, the washing machine can wash away personal data and other types of sensitive data. This is what Kristina Andersson, researcher at RISE, tells us.
She also shares three lessons and insights that have been learned during the project:
- The first is that it takes time to implement change.
- An organization is needed behind it that supports the change process
- It is important to think about data security, so that sensitive data remains within the authority, while non-sensitive data is OK to let go outside the authority
- We hope that many authorities will become interested in our washing machine, because we see that there is a great need to be able to wash data in an efficient way, says Kristina Andersson.

- AWD has also conducted a series of webinars, which can also be accessed afterwards.
