Are you curious about the ongoing 6G project?
What is 6G and why is it important?
Wireless communication plays a crucial role in society and communication networks have become a central part of critical infrastructure. With increasing eligibility requirements for wireless technology, continued research efforts are also required that strengthen collaboration both nationally and internationally, which is crucial for, among other things, standardization and continuous development.
Development of the next generation of wireless networks, 6G, has begun, and the technology is expected to improve speed and data processing, seamless connectivity, and reduced latency. 6G systems involve various technology areas, from software and artificial intelligence (AI) to semiconductors and radio communications.
A faster wireless system is expected to lead to a range of new data-driven applications and enable increased productivity in many different areas and industries. A secure and robust digital infrastructure is also of great importance for both business and society at large.
About the government mission
The government has tasked Vinnova and the Swedish Research Council with strengthening basic research, applied research and innovation in sixth generation wireless communication systems (6G). The aim is to strengthen the position of Swedish research and innovation in wireless communication systems, increase the competitiveness of Swedish companies in the area and strengthen the conditions for Swedish research environments to participate in international research collaboration and gain access to international research infrastructure.

Vinnova's 6G collaborations
We collaborate and collaborate with partners nationally and internationally to ensure that Sweden is at the forefront. Since 2024, Vinnova, the Swedish Research Council and National Science Foundation (NSF) have been part of an agreement to promote joint research and innovation initiatives, and the first goal is efforts within 6G.
The agreement makes it easier for us to exchange knowledge and initiate technical collaborations with American research institutions, universities and companies. It gives us access to valuable expertise and resources that can create new opportunities for Swedish companies to be competitive globally.
The European Commission is working with member states and industry in the Smart Network and Services (SNS Joint Undertaking)) partnership to ensure Europe's leading role in 6G development.
The investments within the partnership are crucial for Swedish organizations to gain access to cutting-edge expertise, infrastructure and pilot lines, and to contribute to the competitiveness of Europe and Sweden. Vinnova participates in State Representative Group and several Swedish organizations work actively in SNS JU's interest organization, 6G-IA (Industry Association).
